Your astro tour begins with a fascinating introduction to the night sky, where you'll learn to identify the brightest stars, planets, constellations and the Milky Way while gaining a basic understanding of our solar system and the universe beyond.

The highlight of the evening is observing celestial objects through our powerful telescope. Depending on the season, you may view planets, colourful nebulae, star clusters, double stars, distant galaxies and even neighbouring galaxies millions of light-years away.

Stargazing Experience

There are few places on Earth where the night sky appears as spectacular as it does at Rooisand Desert Ranch. As darkness falls, thousands of stars emerge overhead, revealing the Milky Way in breathtaking detail. On moonless nights, the sky becomes a natural planetarium unlike anything most visitors have ever experienced.

Relax under the crystal-clear desert sky while learning about the Southern Cross, the Magellanic Clouds, visible planets, seasonal constellations and the fascinating stories behind them. Whether you choose a guided experience or simply spend a quiet evening gazing upwards, Rooisand offers a magical connection with the universe that will stay with you long after your visit

The Planetary Walk

The complimentary Planetary Walk is a great introduction to the cosmos, planets, galaxies, etc and may be walked (2.5km) before an Astro Tour by those that have not had exposure to astronomy before;

A model of our solar system has been set up along the path stretching between the ranch and observatory, a distance of about 2.5km. True to scale in size and distance (about 1: 1.79 billion), the trail starts off at the ranch gate and guides the hiker along to explore Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and finally, Neptune, located at the end of the trail at the Observatory.

In this model, the speed of light is around 16.74 cm/s, or, in other words, hikers walk through the solar system at about 8 times the speed of light!

This activity is offered free of charge and is the perfect introduction to raw astronomy and thus an ideal prelim to an astro-tour in the evening
